Heirloom Timber Framing was contracted by local general contractor Cayce Price of Chimney Rock, Residential Home Builders in Hayesville, North Carolina to design, engineer, hand-fashion and install this timber frame annex for an existing local timber frame home. Heirloom Timber Framing also installed the roof structural insulated panel system in which the Murus SIPs of Mansfield, Pennsylvania manufactured and supplied. The wall envelope for the timber frame annex was conventionally framed by local contractor Robert Penland of Penland Builders in Hayesville, North Carolina. The architectural design was created by Ellen P. Harris, AIA and Douglas K. Harris, AIA of Harris Architects in Brevard, North Carolina.
The timber used was a local Eastern White Pine, kiln dried for less shrinkage of the timber thus keeping the joinery much more tight during the seasoning period. All joinery was hand-fashioned for greater accuracy and strength to the frame. Cherry pegs were chosen for a lighter contrast in color then Oak pegs but darker in contrast to the White Pine.
Besides having to attach the annex into the existing timber frame home, another accomplishment during the install was to work the timber frame around a chimney. This photo shows the timber frame installed around the existing chimney which is not in the above 3-d models. Note, two of the truss rafters on the chimney’s face being supported by temporarily posts. These rafters had to be “scribed” onsite during the timber frame’s install which, by no means was any small feet of skill. They will eventually become supported by a stone ledger and face on the chimney. This will achieve the desired look of the rafters diving into the chimney.
